Drainage for recycled coffee can flower pots?

I saved a few coffee cans that I have converted over into flower pots. I have not planted anything yet but I was wondering what would be the best drainage to use. I was thinking of putting rocks in the bottom then soil, or making some drainage holes and also using the rocks. Any advise would be much appreciated!

You could either punch holes in the bottom of the cans using a large nail, an awl or you might even try one of those old fashioned beer can openers. Just make 4 holes spaced evenly around the can.

You.could also put your plants in those super cheap plastic pots and set them in the cans like a planter. That way the can catches the water that runs out of the pots. You will have to empty out the extra water, of course.

One more thought, completely off the subject of flowerpots but another use for the cans: use a nail or awl to pierce holes in the side of can in a pleasing design. Set a votive candle or small pillar candle inside and you have a luminaria for your porch or garden. You can pierce the top of the can, too, and string wire as a handle and make it so you can hang it in a tree or from your porch ceiling. You could also paint the outside of the cans for colorful addition to your outdoors whether used as a flowerpot or luminaria.

Oh yeah! One more thought: set a small vase inside the can. Fill the vase with water and flowers and you have a unique arrangement for your table.
Reply:Those "packing peanuts" you get when you receive a pkg. in the mail works good and is much lighter than rocks. If you have empty, used pharmacy pill bottles around, they can be used also. A thin layer of coffee filters in the bottom keeps the dirt inside when you water the plants.
Reply:punch about 6-8 holes in the bottom( a large nail works well) then put in about an inch of rocks or broken clay pots and you should be all set to plant.
