Why do flower pots have pierced holes on the bottom?

Hello,

What is the purpose of the pierced holes on the bottom of the flower pots? What will happen if I close them?

Why do flower pots have pierced holes on the bottom?
They stop the plant from drowning, what water isnt absorbed by the soil and roots drains out of these holes.,
Reply:Drainage, as others have stated. If it is a houseplant or placed where excess water will cause damage, place something under it to collect it. That way you will also be able to judge if you are watering correctly. Closing them is an option, but you risk over-watering. Also, unglazed clay saucers are not waterproof.
Reply:the holes let excess water drain from the soil. If you close the holes in the pot, water will build up in the pot and could kill your plant. Too much water is just as bad as too little water for a plant. so keep the holes in the pots! :)
Reply:The holes are for drainage. Without drainage, the plant may drown/suffer root damage, etc. Instead of closing it up consider blocking it with a broken piece of clay flowerpot or a rock. This will slow the drainage without fear of plant damage or death.
Reply:its to allow the excess water to drain out. if you close them it could harm the plant from too much water
