I live in an apartment in Southern California. I have a patio that gets a little sun but is mostly shaded. I am new at this and would like to put potted flowers outside but I am not sure what would do well, especially in pots. I have a Princess flower that is not doing very well (my mother-in-law gave it to me). I think it is supposed to have more sun. Any help would be appreciated!
Potted flowers that grow well in shaded areas?
Hydrangeas do well in pots and tolerate shade well as long as they have a little sun. The most common is the "mop head", but there are many beautiful varieties. Agapanthas also tolerate shade well and are beautiful bulb plants. Of course, there are the ever popular ferns that require shade, "airplane plants" and the wondering jew. My favorite is fusia. It produces beautiful dark pink and royal purple blooms. It loves shade and dies if it gets too much hot sun. Hope that helps and good luck!
Reply:I live in an apartment with a shady area and I find the best flowers are begonias. They are bigger and more colorful than impatiens. Hostas also do well in shaded areas, you can get flowering ones or the leafy kind.
Reply:Impatiens will do great in shade.....and they come in numerous colors.
Reply:Try impatiens. These are an annual you can buy at any garden center...not sure if they are available in your area or not right now though.
Reply:impatiens and coleus, keep them watered
