Inexpensive and readily available would be nice too.
What hearty, perennial flower would you recommend for potting?
I know you asked for inexpensive, but try to buy containers with plants already growing. Remember that they may go into shock by being moved from the nursery, so try to give them the same conditions.
We bought Maid of Orleans jasmine. The small white flowers smell good. Read and follow the directions that come with the plants.
Hardy hibiscus is another fine plant and grows tall and full. Flowers should appear in.

Reply:Whatever perennial you decide to plant will take a year to fill out full and have lots of blossoms. That's the way they are. Hardy plants depend on the zone you live in -- how cold it gets in the winter. You could go to a plant nursery and just choose some you like and ask there if the ones you choose are perennial in your hardiness zone.
Reply:My favorites that can be grown from seed are:
Chrysanthemum leucanthemum Ox-Eye Daisy
Gaillardia aristata Perennial Gaillardia
Heliopsis helianthoides Ox-Eye Sunflower
Linum lewisii Lewis Flax
Lupinus alpestris Mountain Lupine
Penstemon strictus Rocky Mtn. Penstemon
Reply:Clematis
It's a flowering vine.
If you put it in a pot, and add a wire frame, you will have a lovely topiary in a year
